Evelyn Spikes

An Interview with Evelyn Spikes, Artist of the Week

Q:  Tell us about your family and pets.
My husband, Rod, and I have been empty nesters for about 4 years now, and it's good. We will celebrate our 28th anniversary in May.  Our sons, Colby and Jordan, are 26 and 24, respectively. Colby is the chef trying life in NYC, and Jordan is a Psych graduate who is working with troubled children until he goes to grad school next year (?) to become a clinical psychologist. They are still very close to us... thanks to cell phones and computers!  More than once, I've received a call to get online and look up a map or a bus route or a specific store.  And I can do that from out in the sticks of NE Oregon. LOL

Q: Tell us about your childhood, where you grew up, and when your creativity began.
I'm a farm girl who grew up just 25 miles from where I live now. I spent my adolescence riding horseback, driving tractor and wheat truck.  I have never been considered "creative", but it's coming!  LOL  When I was in junior high, my mother gave me colored pencils to make Christmas cards for her.  I could look at still life objects and copy pretty well.  Only after I retired and got into stamping did I find all these wonderful avenues for creativity. (I do need to mention that I started in photography when I was in my early teens, and it was only when I got into crafting so intensely that I have let the photography move to the back burner...other than recording all kinds of family events.)

Q:  To what do you attribute your talents and what inspires you?
Lots of time to play!  I look at tons of magazines and find inspiration in lots of places.  Sometimes, it even works!

Q:  How did you find PWA?
Georgia Wood, the "Beaded Gourd Goddess," and I were both reps for Dream Impressions, and she told me that I needed to join PWA.  That was the  best advice ever.

Q:  When did you begin stamping?
About one year before I retired in 2001.

Q:  What is your favorite stamping technique?
I'll try almost anything that comes out.  I must admit, though, that I keep going back to alcohol inks.

Q:  Do you have any other hobbies or interests, besides Stamping?
Well, I used to read...and I used to take a lot of pictures....and maybe I'll get back there someday.  LOL

Q:  Will you show us some pictures of your stamp/craft room?
It's about 9x10 and was the nursery before it became our youngest son's bedroom when he got older.
