Diane Martin aka Fly Di

An Interview with Diane Martin aka Fly Di, Artist of the Week

Q: Tell us about your family and pets.
I am the second of four children. All of us were born in California at the same hospital by the same Doctor. Later we moved to Hawaii. All of us live somewhere in Washington now. I have been married to Louie for 25 years. Between us we have 4 daughters, Jayne, Tammie, Carrie and Christine. They are all married with families of their own. We have 11 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Our pets are Dusty (12 years old) and Nellie (almost 2 years). Both dogs are Labs and love to be outside, they also love the water.

Q: Tell us about your childhood, where you grew up, and when your creativity began.
I lived in California for 9 years with a year in Germany when I was 2 years old.  In 1959 we moved to Hawaii. We lived about 15 blocks from the beach.  I was allowed to go the beach with friends when I was in the 7th grade.  We moved to Spokane, WA in 1965.  I was on the synchronized swim team at Shadle Park High School.  After High School I attended Eastern Washington University (State College at the time).  There I was also on a swim team, where I raced.  I have always loved being in the water. I have always been more athletic than artistic.

Q: To what do you attribute your talents and what inspires you?
I didn't believe I had talent at all. My Mother sewed beautifully and my older sister paints. I was not any good at either one. Now, stamping is another story, I love it. You do not have to draw just stamp the image color it and combine papers and embellish to make what pleases you. The PWA group is very encouraging and the classes are great inspiration.

Q: How did you find PWA?
I found PWA through the sister of one my High School friends. Sandy Belair invited me to her house to stamp and showed the website. I was hooked.

Q: When did you begin stamping?
I started stamping about 7 years ago. I was invited to a stamping party and bought my first stamp set, a stamp pad, some pencils and paper. I never looked back.

Q: What is your favorite stamping technique?
I do not have any one favorite technique. I love to try new things and move on to the next one. Right I have been having fun making embellishments. Marjie taught some classes with hefty plates. I changed a couple of things to make it easier. I also like to use punches and shrink plastic. You can make all kinds of things.

Q: Do you have any other hobbies or interests, besides Stamping?
Louie and I love to fly fish. We belong to the Spokane Fly Fishers and go on many of their outings. We fish Washington, Idaho and Montana. We both tie the flies we use too. Louie ties more than I do, as I'd rather stamp.

Q: Will you show us some pictures of your stamp/craft room?
The craft room is in the basement, it has been great as I can shut the door and leave the mess. We are in the process of making another change in our life. I have been working out of bins trying to get organized enough to move. We are trying to sell our house now and we want to move into an RV and travel. We want to take the craft stuff and do some fly fishing along the way. So the pictures are of the few things left out. Still looks like plenty of stuff though.
