Chriss Grabb

An Interview with Chriss Grabb, Artist of the Week

Q: Tell us about your family and pets.
I've been married for 11 years to my fabulous husband, Dan, who indulges me way too much. Because he never tells me no, we have 6 four-legged children - 4 cats: Maud'dib (named after a character in Dune), Olivia and Elliott (Law & Order: Criminal Intent), Xander (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and 2 dogs - Mina (Dracula) and Sydney (the city). Dan also has two aquariums full of fish; a freshwater tank and a gorgeous saltwater tank with beautiful coral and tropical fish. (The fish have no names but they don't seem to care.) And last but not least - my extended family, via adoption, is bats, bats, bats!

Q: Tell us about your childhood, where you grew up, and when your creativity began.
I was born an only child in Wichita, Kansas and had a pretty uneventful life. I moved to Washington when I was 13 and I've been here ever since. My mother is an extremely talented crafter and always had a project going when I was growing up, so I was exposed pretty early on. My first adventure as an artist was smuggling a crayon to bed at the tender age of one and coloring the wall next to my crib. When they moved me to the other side of the room (sans crayon), I briefly explored interior decorating by stripping off all the wallpaper I could reach and eating it. Home decorating didn't taste that great and Art had fewer calories, so my choice was pretty easy.

Q: What inspires you?
I find inspiration in everything - my friends, my surroundings, nature (bats, bats, bats), even television shows and movies! ("Aye," say my friends, who had to endure an endless fleet of Pirate cards a few years ago.) My sense of humor is a tad dark and twisted and I always enjoy finding a way to make a card show that. I've also made sample cards for a few different companies and it's always interesting to work with images that I wouldn't necessarily pick myself.

Q: How did you find PWA?
I took a shaker card class from Suzanne almost 2 years ago. I loved the technique and the beads but wasn't really hooked until someone dared me to go to the PWA WLSBP Retreat. I did and now PWA will never get rid of me!

Q: When did you begin stamping?
I've been stamping for about 5 or 6 years. My first stamps were all cute and sweet with cows and kittens and flowers galore. (Somebody hold me, I'm scared!)

Q: What is your favorite stamping technique?
I enjoy a variety of techniques and trying new things so it's easier to tell you what I don't like. Collage! It's the bane of my existence - everything touching in a crazy hodge podge of overlapping madness! I'm working on my phobia through aversion therapy but it's a hard and strenuous journey. And no, I don't like my food to touch either.

Q: Do you have any other hobbies or interests, besides Stamping?
I'm an avid bat collector and am always on the lookout to add to my collection. I adore horror movies of all types (Go Aliens!) and love to read tawdry romance novels. I dabble in short story writing and have been known to fall madly in love with Mounties and select Boy Bands.

Q: Will you show us some pictures of your stamp/craft room?
It's an endless black hole of messiness. Trust me, you're better off not seeing it.
