Andrea Rivers

An Interview with Andrea Rivers, Artist of the Week

Q: Tell us about your family and pets:
Let's see - since I moved out west from Missouri to Washington my friends here are my family. It was a big decision but last July I made the leap and moved out here. It was just a trial and I was supposed to go home in October but I am still here and have no plans to return anytime soon.

As for the pets, well there is a large fluffy cat that resides in the same house. He only pretends to be my cat if I'm first up in the morning and he needs to be fed. :)

Q: Tell us about your childhood, where you grew up, and when your creativity began:
I grew up in St. Joseph Missouri. I can't really say when my creativity began. I always had plenty of art supplies, whether it was paint, or paper or something crafty. Both my grandmothers were wonderful quilters. My mom was always crocheting, I always liked art. I really enjoyed art in HS and loved working on the school play scenery. I went on to college and majored in Commercial Art. I had to take a lot of traditional art classes- ceramics, painting, drawing, photography, and printmaking. My heart is really into printmaking and photography and I think that's a small reason I turned to rubber stamps- it is a form of printmaking. :) I have even carved my own stamps- okay just a few- but I love the process!

Q: How did you find PWA?:
Actually PWA found me. I was deep into the realm of dominoes- my first real branch of altering stuff aside from just rubberstamping and had been incorporating microbeads on my dominoes. I saw a post for PWA, joined the group and have been a part of it ever since.

Q: When did you begin stamping?:

I bought my first stamp in 1999, I had graduated from college, was missing the printmaking studio. I always loved walking down the rubberstamp aisle at Hobby Lobby and decided to try them out. My first stamp was a Garfield stamp holding his bear Pookey. I still have that stamp somewhere even though my tastes have changed dramatically.

Q: What is your favorite stamping technique?:
I don't know if I have a favorite one- I am always trying new things and experimenting. I use Adirondack markers a lot! If I'm coloring on paper- I love using them and a blending pen. Otherwise I use them a lot on my dominoes. Of course I LOVE dominoes!

Q: Do you have any other hobbies or interests, besides Stamping?:

I love photography, I enjoy reading a good suspenseful mystery and I am a HUGE Conan O'Brien fan.
